VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 10, 2006--MIV Therapeutics, Inc. (OTCBB:MIVT - News; FWB:MIV), a leading developer of new generation biocompatible coatings and advanced drug delivery systems for cardiovascular stents and other implantable medical devices, announced today the further expansion of its program to develop and commercialize advanced biomedical products with the hiring of Vlad Budzynski MD, PhD, as Senior Scientist in Drug Research and Application.

In his new position, Dr. Budzynski will be responsible for overseeing the pharmaceutical aspects of development of MIVT's multiplatform Hydroxyapatite-based polymer-free drug delivery systems, with particular focus on drug-eluting cardiovascular stents. He will also research pharmaceutical aspects and advise on other initiatives to extend the Company's advanced drug delivery technologies into other potential fields of application, such as new generation orthopedic implants or the rapidly expanding inhalable drug delivery sector. The market for drug-eluting stents is one of the fastest growing segments of the medical device arena, with annual growth approaching 25%.

"We are delighted to welcome Dr. Vlad Budzynski, a distinguished biomedical scientist and experienced hands-on medical practitioner, whose depth and range of expertise in pharmacology and drug development will substantially sharpen our competitive edge and leadership position in today's high-growth global marketplace for advanced drug delivery solutions," said Arc Rajtar, Chief Technology Officer for MIVT. "He will be highly valued member of our team and a strong new asset in ensuring further acceleration of our extensive research and development program."

In addition, as MIVT progresses further toward product commercialization, Dr. Budzynski will be responsible for interacting with external testing authorities, drug manufacturers and drug licensors, and for the execution and planning of additional drug-related studies, including pharma-kinetic, dose evaluation, biocompatibility and others, and for pharmacological input to clinical trials and regulatory affairs.

In the last decade, Dr. Budzynski has focused on the development and evaluation of outcomes in pre-clinical and clinical settings for a variety of companies, particularly in the evaluation of new anti-cancer drug candidates, vaccines, immuno-modulators and cytotoxic drugs, as well as interacting with clinicians to establish clinical protocols.

Dr. Budzynski has had an accomplished and multifaceted scientific career in the research and discovery of biological response modifiers, vaccines, monoclonals and cytotoxic drugs. He received his Ph.D. in 1980 from the Ludwik Hirszfeld Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Wroclaw, Poland, where he subsequently was granted the highly respected title of Doctor Habilitatus. His professional career included senior scientific research and management positions in companies such as Inimex Pharmaceuticals, Cytovax Biotechnologies and Biomira Inc.

MIV Therapeutics' hiring of Dr. Budzynski follows other major capital investments by the Company in recent months to expand and reinforce its personnel, laboratory equipment and to provide required resources to improve efficiency and competency of the Company's growing R&D infrastructure. MIVT seeks to deliver a wide array of vital therapeutic benefits to millions of patients requiring coronary stents and other implanted medical devices; the Company already has an Intellectual Property portfolio of more than 40 issued and pending patents and licenses.

MIVT's advanced coatings for medical devices and drug-delivery systems are primarily based on Hydroxyapatite (HAp), a naturally bio-porous material that is found in human bone and teeth, and which has demonstrated excellent safety and biocompatibility in preclinical animal studies conducted thus far.

About MIV Therapeutics Inc.

MIV Therapeutics is developing a next-generation line of advanced biocompatible coatings for passive and drug-eluting applications on cardiovascular stents and a broad range of other implantable medical devices. The Company's ultra-thin coating formulation is designed to protect surrounding tissue from potentially harmful interactions with bare metallic stents. The Company's unique ultra-thin coating platform is derived from an organic material called hydroxyapatite (HAp) which has demonstrated excellent safety and biocompatibility in vivo animal studies. Hydroxyapatite is a bioactive porous material that makes up the bone mineral and matrix of teeth and is widely used today as a bone substitute material and for coatings on implantable fixation devices in orthopedic, dental and other applications. The Company's novel polymer-free drug eluting technologies based on Hydroxyapatite could also provide an attractive alternative to current polymer-based drug eluting coatings on the stent market, which have been associated with undesirable medical effects. The Company's drug eluting coatings are additionally designed to suit a broad range of implantable medical devices that could benefit from highly customizable drug release profiles. MIVT has a Collaborative Research Agreement (CRA) with the University of British Columbia and has received Government grant for its research program on the "Development of Novel Drug Eluting Composite Coatings for Cardiovascular Stents," under the National Research Council-Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP). Under this sponsorship, the Company is expected to complete its drug-eluting research and development program and to reach product commercialization stage.
