MIV Therapeutics to Unveil Technologies Targeting $23 Billion Orthopedics Device Market
Thursday August 10, 4:32 pm ET
Company Announces Broader Applications for Proprietary Biocompatible HAp Coating Technologies to Improve Hip, Knee and Spinal Implants

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 10, 2006--MIV Therapeutics (OTCBB:MIVT - News; FWB:MIV), a leading developer of next-generation biocompatible coatings and advanced drug delivery systems for cardiovascular stents and other implantable medical devices, will unveil technology to address multiple revenue opportunities in the $23 billion orthopedic device market at the upcoming World Orthopedic Organization (SICOT) conference in Buenos Aires, later this month.

MIVT is developing a new generation of coating applications based on Hydroxyapatite (HAp), an organically derived substance, well known and widely used in dentistry and orthopedics. The Company's proprietary HAp-based drug delivery nano- and micro-technology is well suited for use as a therapeutic coating for a variety of orthopedic implants.

"The orthopedic market represents an enormous opportunity for MIVT and is a natural extension of our R&D program," said Dr. Mark Landy, President of MIVT. "We believe our proprietary HAp technologies will significantly improve patient outcomes when compared to current solutions, in both cardiology and orthopedics."

Dr. Tom Troczynski, Ph.D, Vice President of Coating Technologies of MIVT, will for the first time present the Company's R&D progress in orthopedics, at the upcoming World Orthopedic Organization (SICOT) conference in Buenos Aires, on August 24, 2006.

"While HAp is known to improve the integration of hip and knee implants with bone, particularly in the critical early several-week period after implantation, MIVT's proprietary drug-carrying coatings may provide further significant impact on post-implant success rates," said Dr. Troczynski. "MIVT's nano-drug-elution technology may have significant impact on implantation protocols, and post-implantation success rate for patients receiving hip and knee implants, as well as spinal devices."

According to industry analysts, the 2006 orthopedic device market will total an estimated $23.2 billion worldwide. MIVT's technologies address products used in the reconstructive and spinal segments of this market, representing approximately $16 billion.

MIVT's HAp-based biocompatible coatings are designed to substantially improve the safety and long-term performance of vascular stents and other devices because they do not trigger adverse reactions of the body's immune system. Such complications include inflammation, creation of thrombus (blood clots) and, in the case of vascular stents, re-narrowing of arteries, called restenosis, due to endothelial tissue re-growth inside blood vessels in the area of newly implanted stents.

SICOT is an international not-for-profit association incorporated under Belgian law with the aim to advance the science and art of orthopedics and traumatology at an international level and to foster and develop teaching, research and education. In September 2005 it celebrated its 75th anniversary.

About MIV Therapeutics Inc.

MIV Therapeutics is developing a next-generation line of advanced biocompatible coatings for passive and drug-eluting applications on cardiovascular stents and a broad range of other implantable medical devices. The Company's ultra-thin coating formulation is designed to protect surrounding tissue from potentially harmful interactions with bare metallic stents. The Company's unique ultra-thin coating platform is derived from an organic material called hydroxyapatite (HAp) which has demonstrated excellent safety and biocompatibility in vivo animal studies. Hydroxyapatite is a bioactive porous material that makes up the bone mineral and matrix of teeth and is widely used today as a bone substitute material and for coatings on implantable fixation devices in orthopedic, dental and other applications. The Company's novel polymer-free drug eluting technologies based on Hydroxyapatite could also provide an attractive alternative to current polymer-based drug eluting coatings on the stent market, which have been associated with undesirable medical effects. The Company's drug eluting coatings are additionally designed to suit a broad range of implantable medical devices that could benefit from highly customizable drug release profiles. MIVT has a Collaborative Research Agreement (CRA) with the University of British Columbia and has received Government grant for its research program on the "Development of Novel Drug Eluting Composite Coatings for Cardiovascular Stents," under the National Research Council-Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP). Under this sponsorship, the Company is expected to complete its drug-eluting research and development program and to reach product commercialization stage.
