Enhanced Infrastructure Designed to Accelerate Development of Unique HAp-Based Stent Coating and Drug Delivery Systems

VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 28, 2005--MIV Therapeutics, Inc. (OTCBB:MIVT - News; Frankfurt/FSE:MIV), a developer of next-generation biocompatible stent coatings and drug delivery technologies, announced today that it has expanded its comprehensive innovation and development program to improve advanced vascular stents and internal drug-delivery systems.

"MIV Therapeutics has made a significant capital investment recently of more than $250,000 in laboratory equipment to help ensure the Company's timely progress toward commercialization of our proprietary Hydroxyapatite (HAp) technologies," said Arc Rajtar, Chief Technology Officer for MIVT. "The new equipment will be used in our research and development of a new generation of stent coatings and drug-delivery systems based on HAp, a substance that has demonstrated superb bio-friendliness and safety as a coating for medical devices."

Sophisticated coating and analytic equipment, computers, laboratory accessories, and other auxiliary equipment have been procured as part of the investment recently to improve efficiency and streamlining of the Company's growing R&D infrastructure. In addition, MIVT has also hired three new researchers to its expanding scientific and research team.

"We are pleased with the expansion of our overall R&D operations, which reflects MIVT's continued commitment to advance and apply proprietary HAp technologies to the fullest extent possible. We believe our technology platform carries tremendous promise for broad therapeutic applications," he said. "In addition, we are planning to hire an additional Senior Scientist with a background and focus on pharmacology, drug elution and drug modification, to further assist MIVT's characterization and development of HAp-based biomedical solutions."

Two of the recent hires were previously graduate students at the University of British Columbia (UBC), a strategic research and development partner that provided a number of patents and patent applications for HAp-based stent coating technologies and drug delivery applications. "That kind of familiarity with our development program at UBC will ensure their very smooth transition to our own in-house laboratory. This move will be advantageous in terms of bringing under one roof a number of HAp researchers for optimal laboratory cooperation and streamlining of operations," said Mr. Rajtar.

The market for drug-eluting stents is one of the fastest growing segments within the medical device arena, with annual growth approaching 25%. MIVT seeks to deliver a wide array of vital therapeutic benefits to millions of patients requiring coronary stents and other implanted medical devices; the Company already has an Intellectual Property portfolio of more than 40 issued and pending patents and licenses. These proprietary solutions are primarily based on HAp, a bio-porous material found in human bone and teeth that has demonstrated excellent safety and biocompatibility characteristics in preclinical animal studies.

The Company's recent hires include:

  • Dorna Hakimemehr: An advanced Ph.D. candidate who was instrumental in developing proprietary HAp technologies at UBC. Dorna was one of the authors of patents secured by MIVT under exclusive license from the University of British Columbia. She will join Dr. Dean-Mo Liu, MIVT's Chief Scientist, Drug-Delivery Technologies, providing support to his research of "Smart" drug-delivery technologies and controlled drug release solutions.
  • Manus Tsui: A former researcher at UBC in Electro-Chemical Deposition, and another co-author of patents licensed from UBC, who will contribute to the development of HAp-based composite passive and drug-eluting coating technologies at MIVT.
  • Tim Yetman: A biomedical technologist with experience in the medical devices industry who will support MIVT's R&D team in preparation for a number of passive and drug eluting coating trials planned for the near future.

About MIV Therapeutics, Inc.

MIV Therapeutics, Inc. is developing a next-generation line of advanced biocompatible coatings for passive and drug-eluting application on cardiovascular stents and for application on other implantable medical devices. The Company's ultra-thin coating formulation is designed primarily to protect surrounding tissue from the chemical interaction with metal stents. The Company's unique ultra-thin coating has been derived from a biocompatible material called hydroxyapatite (HAp) that during in-vivo animal trials demonstrated excellent safety and superior healing properties pursued by the science in the field of advanced implantable drug delivery systems. Hydroxyapatite is a bioactive porous material that makes up the bone mineral and matrix of teeth. It is widely used as a bone substitute material and for coating implantable fixation devices in orthopedic, dental and other applications. The Company's novel drug eluting technologies based on Hydroxyapatite provide attractive alternative solution to polymer-based drug eluting coatings currently in the stent market. The Company's drug eluting coating is designed to suit a broad range of implantable medical devices which may benefit from a highly customizable drug release profile. MIVT reached a Collaborative Research Agreement (CRA) with the University of British Columbia and supported a research and development grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) in 2002 for the development of Hydroxyapatite as a drug-eluting coating. In December 2004 MIVT received a Government grant for the research program titled "Development of Novel Drug Eluting Composite Coatings for Cardiovascular Stents" under the National Research Council -- Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP). Under this sponsorship the Company will progress to the development stage, which is expected to finalize the drug-eluting research and development Program.
